“If Only These Vehicles Could Talk…Wait a Second, They Can!”

Extracting Data Recorded in Vehicles to Describe What Really Happened
“Was the driver speeding?”
“Did they hit the brakes and try to avoid the accident?”
“Was there any sort of failure in the vehicle? Is there subrogation potential?”
These are a few of many questions our clients most commonly ask us when discussing the details of a loss. In the past, a forensic expert would be forced to rely on the physical evidence available to them on the scene as the sole basis of their opinion as to what exactly took place in the incident. They would use various scientific investigative methods to extract measurements from the scene, and apply their knowledge of the laws of physics and human reflexes to develop a theory on what took place. Today, with the significant development of automotive technology, there is a way to safeguard yourself from basing your claim on scientific theory, and more so on solid facts, and that is by simply extracting the data from the “black box” of the vehicle, which tells you exactly took place.
Do you want to know if the driver applied the breaks on time?
Is your driver claiming to have tried to avoid but the vehicle had a mind of its own?
We have been hearing stories like these for years, and finally, the forensic engineering world has the tools to definitely report what happened in every system in the vehicle (transmission, engine, brakes, airbags, controllers, etc.) before, during and after an incident.
In 2005, car manufacturers started to equip their vehicles with Event Device Recorders (EDRs).1 These incredible devices record and store data constantly, of what the vehicle is doing and how each of the systems are operating and how the vehicle is behaving. When a loss takes place it is through the extraction of this data that we can answer the “whys” and “hows” of an accident with FACTS. All you need is the right set of tools and a forensic expert who knows how to properly interpret the data.
We are seeing an overwhelming demand for this data in the Canadian insurance marketplace. The process is fast, cost-effective and most importantly, tells you the story of what took place based on factual data.
Watch our 1 hour FREE webinar where our forensic expert, Russ Colosi, answers the following questions through real-life case studies about these incredible investigations:
- What types of vehicles are equipped with EDRs?
- What kind of data can you collect from EDRs and how can it help my claim investigation?
- How long do these investigations take and what do you need from adjusters/lawyers involved in the claim administration?
- How do you get your hands on the EDRs? Who legally owns the data?
- What is the difference between EDRs in passenger vehicles vs. heavy vehicles?
- How much do these investigations cost usually?
A must-see for:
- Insurance adjusters
- Lawyers
- Risk managers
- Brokers
- Fleet managers
